Glass drinking straws: impractical and dangerous?
A clinical study conducted by the University of Frankfurt am Main under the direction of Prof. Kempf shows that germs survive inside the straw during low-temperature washing cycles, so bacterial and viral diseases can be transmitted to various users through repeated use. The reason for this: The straw's closed geometry means that water in the dishwasher can only penetrate up to 4–5 cm inside. As a consequence, the central part is not cleaned thoroughly.
Some manufacturers supply a small brush to clean the straw manually, but this is time-consuming in private households and virtually impossible in the catering industry. Plus, the straws can only be dried on the outside, meaning germs can form on the inside after a short time despite cleaning. Visually, it also doesn't look much better: Lime deposits form inside over time, and even with a brush these are difficult to remove. Glass drinking straws are also not shatterproof, so these straws are far from an alternative, and certainly not for children or for events.
